Kunzite is more widely available than hiddenite. Its named after G.F Kunz, who first descried the gem in 1902 Its colouring agent is manganese, which creates a range of very petty colours: pink, bluish lilac, light violet and pink-peach. Kunzite is generally gale pale, so any naturally intense coloured stones are rare and carry a premium. To achieve more attractive pink colours, it is common for stones with brownish tones to be heated to a temperature of 300F (150C).
