Some people prefer purchasing jewelry items that have gemstones installed on them. Gemstones do not only add value, but they also improve the appearance of any piece of jewelry. With numerous types of precious and semi-precious gemstones available all over the world, diamonds are the most sought-after among these gemstones. Diamonds have characteristics and qualities that make them more valuable than the other types of gemstones. However, people need to also realize that there are also two types of diamonds that are being used on different kinds of jewelry items. People should be familiar with the differences between these two types of diamonds: natural mined diamonds and laboratory-grown diamonds.

What Makes Them Different?

One of the major differences between these types of diamonds is the cost to purchase any of them. Naturally mined diamonds are considered to be the costliest among the various types of gemstones available. This is because it takes more resources, effort, technology, and manpower to mine diamonds the natural way. Also, it must be remembered that the industry relies on how much resources are being produced by nature when it comes to natural diamonds. Laboratory-created diamonds, on the other hand, use technology to mimic the processes that nature uses to create natural mined diamonds. This ensures that it would use up fewer resources to create. Furthermore, as there are new brands that are growing their diamonds recently, the supply of high-quality laboratory-grown diamonds has significantly increased. These factors have helped create a difference between the prices of these two types of diamonds. On average, laboratory-grown diamonds cost 30% to 40% less than the cost of  natural mined diamonds.

By looking at the long-term value of diamonds, throughout the years it can be seen that naturally mined diamonds slowly increase their value over time. It is different though with laboratory-grown diamonds. Many people believe that this type of diamond has little to no resale value. When purchasing jewelry with diamonds on them, it is highly advised that the purchase should never be based on their resale values. The focus should be placed more on wearing these jewelry items for as long as possible since both types of diamonds are known for their durability and high rating in the Mohs hardness scale. Both have 10 ratings on this hardness scale since they have the same chemical composition. Diamonds synthetically grown in laboratories are still considered real diamonds. Both types have the same physical and visual characteristics which make it difficult which one was made naturally without the use of special equipment.

Since the process is more difficult to mine naturally produced diamonds, there may be times that supply may be limited during certain periods. There are certain conditions that may hinder mining operations, which in turn may reduce the supply of naturally mined diamonds. Jewelry manufacturers may find it hard to produce excellent-quality jewelry items if they only focus on getting naturally mined diamonds for their products. This is where the increase in the availability of laboratory-grown diamonds came into the picture. Though the prices of jewelry items that use laboratory-grown diamonds are significantly lower, jewelry manufacturers have started to make their customers understand that this type of diamond is almost identical to one that has been mined. Similarities such as shapes, quality, and colors have made the popularity of laboratory-grown diamonds increase over the years.

Environmental sustainability

For those people who are concerned that mining operations would only hurt the environment, they are given the chance to purchase jewelry with diamonds installed on them. This is by the way of using laboratory-grown diamonds. By using either High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) to produce the diamonds, these methods make it possible to imitate how nature has been able to produce excellent-quality diamonds throughout the years. Laboratory-grown diamonds are more sustainable and environmentally friendly since the processes involved in producing them do not involve destroying natural rock formations.  With mining operations, they involve using various types of motorized heavy equipment that may produce pollutants that can be dangerous to the environment. With that being said, laboratory-grown diamonds have their own merits within the industry.
